Characterising the optimal pulse number and frequency for inducing analgesic effects with motor cortex rTMS

نویسندگان

چکیده

High- (?5Hz), but not low-frequency (?1Hz) rTMS (repetitive Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation) of the contralateral primary motor cortex (M1) can induce transient analgesic effects [5]. However, impact TMS frequency and pulse number remains poorly understood may present an opportunity to optimise efficacy promote long-term effects. Prior work indicated that a single session consisting 2,000, 500 pulses 10Hz rTMS, was necessary significant alleviation neuropathic pain relative sham stimulation [7].

Somatotopic organization of the analgesic effects of motor cortex rTMS in neuropathic pain.

BACKGROUND Motor cortex repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) was found to relieve chronic neuropathic pain, but the optimal parameters of stimulation remain to be determined, including the site of stimulation. OBJECTIVE To determine the relationship between cortical stimulation site and pain site regarding the analgesic efficacy of rTMS of motor cortex in chronic neuropathic pa...

The effects of motor cortex rTMS on corticospinal descending activity.

Repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) of the human motor cortex can produce long-lasting changes in the excitability of the motor cortex to single pulse transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS). rTMS may increase or decrease motor cortical excitability depending critically on the characteristics of the stimulation protocol. However, it is still poorly defined which mechanisms and c...

Low-frequency rTMS inhibitory effects in the primary motor cortex: Insights from TMS-evoked potentials

The neuromodulatory effects of repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) have been mostly investigated by peripheral motor-evoked potentials (MEPs). New TMS-compatible EEG systems allow a direct investigation of the stimulation effects through the analysis of TMS-evoked potentials (TEPs). We investigated the effects of 1-Hz rTMS over the primary motor cortex (M1) of 15 healthy volunte...

The Effects of rTMS Combined with Motor Training on Functional Connectivity in Alpha Frequency Band

It has recently been reported that repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation combined with motor training (rTMS-MT) could improve motor function in post-stroke patients. However, the effects of rTMS-MT on cortical function using functional connectivity and graph theoretical analysis remain unclear. Ten healthy subjects were recruited to receive rTMS immediately before application of MT. Low ...
